Stunning HDR picture quality is the highlight of Sony XBR75X940D. It is guaranteed by featuring Ultra HD Premium Certification. As we know, A HD TV with Ultra HD Premium Certification means all of visual specs that delivered meet all of the minimums standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance and of course it can display HDR contents fully. For displaying HDR 10 fully, a HDR TV must provides 0.05 nits – 1000 nits of contrast range while color gamut required is more than 90% of DCI P3 color space with 10 bit depth of color. And although all of 4K TVs that released in 2016 labeled with HDR, but not all of them meet this standardization and can display contents fully. For a while, only top model of each manufactures that compliant with Ultra HD Premium Certification.
For processing HD Signals, Sony XBR75X940D is powered by X1 Engine and 4K X-Reality Pro engine already support HDR 10. Unlike LG SUHD TV or Vizio TVs that support two HDR formats at once HDR10 and Dolby Vision, it Supports HDR 10 only. And to meet the standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance, it is also supported by the number Sony advanced technologies that improve significantly its picture quality whether it is about black level, contrast, or color.
For delivering wide color gamut, there is TriLuminos Display behind it. We all know, TriLuminos display is the Sony’s proprietary technology that becomes its mainstay in last couple years. The result, it can cover more than 93% of DCI P3 Color space while the minimum color gamut that required is 90% of DCI P3 color space. Not only that, it also support 10 bit depth of color that means it can delivers about 1.07 billion shades of color that makes its color gradient looks very smooth, much smoother than 8 bit TV that only can deliver about 16 millions shades of color.
In term of contrast, Sony XBR75X940D also offers good performance. This cannot be separated from great technologies behind it like X-Tended Dynamic Range, Advanced Contrast Enhancer, Local Dimming, and others. The deepest black level reached is about 0.035 nits of black level. This may not quite enough to match what reached by top model Samsung SUHD TV that is about 0.015 nits, but at least it is still lower than standardization set by UHD Alliance, that is 0.05 nits. Moving on peak brightness, on 10% window, it can reach about 1040 nits of peak brightness. Although it is not bright enough than what offered by Samsung SUHD TV that is about 1400 nits, at least this also meet the minimum standardization 1000 nits set by UHD Alliance.
With all display specs that compliant with Ultra HD Premium Certification, can be ascertained Sony XBR75X9400D can display HDR contents fully on its big screen. And of course HDR picture that displayed also looks stunningly and clearly with deep true blacks, dazzling whites, and very accurate color. And of course this is not only when it is displaying HDR, but normal or SDR contents also displayed on its screen. Ultra HD Premium Certification is its guarantee. But unfortunately, unlike X850D that comes with IPS Panel, XBR75X940D comes with panel that has poor viewing angle as its native characteristic. And like other TVs with VA panel, the amazing picture produced will fade started at 20 degrees off center and front.
What performed by Sony XBR75X940D when controlling motion blur is really stunning. Response time of pixels is very quick and this allows motion blur can be minimized. Although cannot be eliminated completely, there is not much motion blur noticeable when it used for watching fast motion images on both native 4K and non 4K video contents. The good performance is also shown by XBR75X940D when controlling 24p playback, whether it is 24p playback like Blu-Ray, via 60i like Satellite/ Cable TV, of even via 60p signals like streaming media. Additionally, motion interpolation technology behind it also offer perfect performance, this means the “Soap Opera Effect” is also minimum on XBR75X940D, whether it is for 30 fps input or 60 fps inputs.
Your main consideration in buying 4K TV certainly is you want to enjoy all of video contents in 4K quality. But unfortunately, not all of contents that available in the market mastered in 4K quality. But you don’t need to worry about it because combination of X1 processor and 4K X-Reality Pro behind Sony XBR75X940D do a great job when up-scaling lower resolution to 4K resolution, even it can be said the best. No matter the sources is 480p like DVDs, 720p like HD TV or 1080p like Blu Ray movies, all of them up-scaled to 4K quality clearly with rich details. And of course, the higher resolution of the sources, the result will looks better, clearer, and more details.
Sony XBR75X940D comes with active 3D technology. But like on most 3D TV, once 3D is activated, the screen will look darker and the increase of “brightness level” is required when you are watching 3D contents. The advantage than passive 3D, each of eyes can receive full resolution of 3D images. Although not as comfortable to watch as to passive 3D technology, crosstalk and flicker is minimal. The result, a 3 mages looks clear and smooth with very noticeable depth of 3D images. But unfortunately, there are no 3D glasses included on its box. This means if you want to enjoy 3D movies, you should buy Sony active 3D glasses separately where their price is not as cheap as the price of passive 3D glasses.
As its smart TV platform, Sony XBR65X940D features Google Android TVs. Like on your Android Smartphone, there is also Google Play Store as the apps store, Google Cast, Google Voice Search and many others. But even so, Apps the provided is not as complete as what provided by android smart Phone. There is such a specific filter that allows not all apps don’t appear on Google TV play store. This is due the use of different controller between Google Android TV and Smart phone where on Android TV use Remote as the controller while smart phone use Touch Screen. But even so, the most popular apps like Web Browser, Netflix, HBO GO, Amazon Video certainly also available on Android TV.
User interface is also designed comfortable to use. But it is not as simple as Tizen or WebOS 3.0 and makes a little confusing when navigating. Performance is also fast and responsive, even it offers faster loading in time than other Smart TV Platforms. And as the controller, it use Sony’s Voice control that has voice navigation functions and other useful functions.
For a big screen 75 Inch with HDR ability, what offered by Sony XBR75X940D in term of sound quality is poor. It is equipped with 4.0 channel speaker system where the power output of each channels is 7.5 watts. The loudness may still enough for a medium or small room but still below average. Moreover there is no built-in woofer, so this makes its low frequency or is very poor particularly when playing music or movies. But even so, you don’t need to worry because this sound quality issues can be solved easily by adding external sound bar separately.
